A domain name can be forwarded or redirected to another domain name or to its specific folder in various ways. Do you want your domain name to be forwarded? Then read this manual with the possibilities.

Alias domain
forward to 1 main domain

An alias domain is ideal if you have registered several domain names and want them all to be on a particular (main) domain. For example, if your main domain is ‘jouwdomeinnaam.nl’ and you have a number of domain names which should all point to the website ‘jouwdomeinnaam.nl’ (for example: ‘jouwdomeinnaam.com’, ‘jouwdomeinnaamnummer2.nl’ and ‘jouwdomeinnaam.de’), then these can be set up as alias domains at your web hosting. You can also have alias domains pointing to specific directories on your main domain.

Standard redirect to another domain name

With a standard redirect, the domain is redirected to another domain name. For example, if you switch from a standard forward from ‘yourdomainname’ to ‘cursuswp.com’, ‘cursuswp.com’ will be visible in the address bar. The user will then realise he is being redirected.

Frame forward to another website

With a frame forward, the domain is forwarded to another domain (website), leaving the url unchanged while loading the forwarded domain in a frame. The user will only be able to see the redirection in the source code.

DNS change from domain name to externally hosted site

If your website is hosted on another server and you have the possibility to register a domain, a change in DNS is an excellent choice. You can change the A-record of your domain to the external IP-address, so that the website refers to the external server, but you can also choose to have for example mail run locally on our servers. A domain name can be redirected to another domain name or to a specific folder of it in various ways. This depends on your web host. If necessary, contact your webhosting for redirecting to another domain name. It is best to adjust the DNS. Read below why.

A-record IP address change for web hosting

The A-records of the IP address change with web hosting works like this. It is a bit different for each web hosting but goes something like this:

Please read the documentation of your web host:

Which is better to change DNS or A records for a domain name?

We sometimes get the question: What is better to change DNS or A-records for your domain name and web hosting? In our opinion it is better to change the instead of the A-records. If the server of the domain name is down, the website will not be redirected. When changing the game server you do not have this problem and therefore less risk.
